PCV valve replacement
I found this during a Google search this morning. I thought it was a good read:

good read , it's a cheap maintenance item even with regular oil changes.
I get a laugh out of people who put those little toy K&N keychain filters on their Honda valvecovers and think they are smarter than the people who engineered the engine.
Thanks for the link Indy.

It's funny (or probably sad) but I found this link while looking for OEM Toyota PCV valves. I was shopping online because the two nearest Toyota Dealerships had none in stock and had to special order them. The last dealer parts guy said he has never sold one for a Toyota and the warehouse didn't even have one. I guess they just replace engines instead of PCV valves. If you do a search for sludged engines, Toyota is mentioned quite a bit too!

One of the first replacement items I did on my S. I even paid a bit more for the OEM one versus the little plastic piece they sell at the auto store.
Good find!

I actually switched to an ap2 2004-2005 valvecover on my ap1 to benefit from the improved pcv valve setup. People underestimate it's value/purpose on a modern engine.
When I bought my car the old pcv valve (ap1 style) wasn't working well and was past due for replacement. I had valvecover gasket seepage, higher oil consumption, and a slightly varnished top end. I cleaned things up, replaced the pcv valve and everything improved across the board.

So your saying that you switch to a ap2 valve cover and it helped out with all of those issue? Please enlighten me because I have a nephew who's got some issue also, and maybe I'll even switch mines too if it gets to that point.
Switching to an ap2 (2004-2005) valvecover allowed me to run the improved pcv setup that engine had over my ap1 setup. The ap2 pcv valve sits more horizontally than the ap1 version, the ap1 valve is more susceptible to oil pooling around the base of the valve which increases oil consumption in certain driving conditions. The ap2 pcv system can reduce oil consumption in cornering, braking and hard acceleration conditions as oil is less likely to pool arond the base of the valve. hth.
Spray carb cleaner in a gummed up one and it will be good as new. If it rattles nicely, and blocks air in one direction it works. It's a very durable part that usually just gets a little sludge in it.
