I haven't had time to check the plugs, but I should probably chance them regardless. I NEVER run anything less than 93 octane, and it's always from a reputable distributor.

Are you guys serious about the shifter lever, or are you being coy?

It's not loose change.

It doesn't sound like the heat shield rattling (I've had this happen on other vehicles before) but I'll check anyway.

It ONLY happens between 8000 and 9000 RPM. The CEL isn't flashing, so I'm not sure if it's knock. I know with my STi, the CEL goes crazy when it knocks.

Are you talking about a slight metallic ringing noise when at those RPMs? If so, my car does that and every other MY00 car that I've encountered does it as well. No idea what it is, but so far it appears to be perfectly normal, and not anything to worry about.

8-9k is very high engine speeds and can cause a bit of a ringing noise. I liken it to drilling into metal plate, a constant ringing sound. My '01 has a similar noise and I have found nothing wrong with it.

They are not kidding about the shifter, however as mentioned if you hold it the sound would stop.

That's exactly what it sounds like. Good to hear it's somewhat normal.

I have a MY00 and this noise is not normal for my car, It does not make this noise at all. Does it sound like the noise is coming from the engine?

You two described it to a "T". That's exactly what it sounds like and what I'm experiencing. Any idea as to what causes this?

My best guess is the high speed engine has very close tolerances, metal moving fast next to metal can vibrate and cause it to "ring" without ever touching it. Possibly some don't hear it do to a different oil?

Currently I am using Mobil1 synthetic, it may be possible that a slightly thicker, non-synthetic oil would act as a vibration damper to get rid of the noise. That or the noise is usually very quiet and I only notice it during certain situations; usually lower gears (lower speed less road noise) with some hard substances on the side of the road (rock wall, houses, etc to reflect the sound).
