Default Please help, Engine doesn't rev over 3000 RPM

Hi all, I am a new S2K owner, just got the car 5 days ago, I hate to introduce myself with a problem, but it just happened today.
the car was driving great and i was revving the engine just over 5500 and suddenly the the check engine light went on and felt like I run out off gas, the engine doesn't rev over 3000 rpm any more and feels like its hitting a rev-limiter or ignition cut off. luckily I was able to pull over to the side of the road and stopped the car. turned the engine off and on again. check engine light still on, but I can rev the engine back all way to red line. I drove the car again and if I try to rush the engine (5500 to 6500) the problem happens again, and engine stops reving over 3000. same; turning engine off and on would solve the problem temporarily.
the car still under factory warranty, but I coudn't get an appointment earlier than next week for repair..
can anybody help please ????? is it software problem or somthing wrong with the engine ?

Was the engine properly warmed up? Need at least 3 bars to VTEC...

He's got an AP2. It's like 7 bars or something like that. 3k rpm is too low for cold rev limiter and it wouldn't set off a CEL.

Hopefully it's a combination of cold rev limiter, an owner mistaking 3k for 5k, and a loose gas cap.

But I smell a fishy used car dealer and a funky engine (and a denied warranty due to "abuse")

You are correct..... wait til the bars are in the middle....

He said it doesnt kick in until 5500ish... I think the engine goes might be going into some sort of protect mode or something if he is doing it repeatedly. Take it to autozone and have them use their OBDII scanner to pick out the code that the ECU is throwing. Chances are that is your problem.

Anyhow, he has an 05, so anything should still be under warranty. I say have the dealer look at it, especially if you can duplicate it right in front of them.

The car is not abused in anyway, I know the previous owner. never raced it, never even broke a speed limit. he bought it coz he wanted a convertible.
I was driving for at least 2 hours. so engine being cold is not the problem. the rev limiter kicks in at 3000 not 5000. it only happens when I push the car hard like reving it up over 6000 (maybe V-tec related ?). so it must be some protection mechanism that causing the engine to rev limit itself. the check engine light went off now for some reason, so if I take it to the dealer can they check the history of the problem ? or the light needs to be on for them to get a reading from ther ECU ?

The ECU will leave a pending code inside the EC U so when teh dealer do an DTC check, they should find out what the problem is.

limp mode.
engine electronically limits itself to 3k to prevent you from doing anymore harm to it untill you get it repaired.
it allows you 3k revs. just enough for you to "limp" home and make arrangements for repair.

It must be different for 2007's . . . because MY04 and MY05 are 7 bars. Perhaps the change in 2006 brought a different amount of bars?

It literally sounds like your VTEC is broken. Take it to the dealer ASAP. Fully describe the symptom, and don't say anything else. Don't tell them you just bought it. Don't give them any reason to deny the claim.
