Have you checked the oil level?

Is there an aftermarket intake on the car? Reason why I say this, I had a short ram intake on mine and I must not have tightened the air filter enough, I got on it and it choked kinda like your describing. Would not rev over 3k. It actually sucked the air filter onto the end of the intake and blocked it. lol Oh well, shit happens.

Have you tried pulling the fuse for the ECU for about 30 seconds to reset it yet?

DO NOT DO THIS.

your car went into limp mode. something serious happened for your car to do this.
do not reset anything. you will erase vital information stored in the computer that will help in diagnosis.
take your car to have it repaired as is.

limp mode.
engine electronically limits itself to 3k to prevent you from doing anymore harm to it untill you get it repaired.
it allows you 3k revs. just enough for you to "limp" home and make arrangements for repair.

If the CEL is or starts flashing, don't drive it at all.

It literally sounds like your VTEC is broken. Take it to the dealer ASAP. Fully describe the symptom, and don't say anything else. Don't tell them you just bought it. Don't give them any reason to deny the claim.
i know im a newbie and i dont even own a s2000, looking into one.(it will be my fourth honda LOL) I saw the problem. That happen to my Vtec accord, because I LOVE VTEC! Check engine came on and it didnt let me pass the vtec engagement point, its turned out to be the Vtec selenoid. I agree with the statement do not reset, until you have found out what it is.

Well I have good news, I just got the car back from the dealer. it was the Crank angle sensor. the wires were too close to one of the pulleys and got trapped and disconnected. luckily it wasn't something major (mechanical or Vtec stuff) so they replaced it for no cost.
but yeah never reset the ECU, they had the whole history of the problem there, and was diagnosed immediately.
