While you're at it...why not add some individual TBs for a hair more go and better throttle response?... Below is a view of those used on a 6 cylinder M3. The first M3 and the present (E46) use Individual TBs, but not the E36 US model.

A vendor is already researching this option, but it will be quite some time off. Head work or internals would really make ITB's shine, but its a chicken before the egg sort of thing.

What kind of filter would be needed to protect the engine if we go with with ITBs?

A filter for ITB's is usually a spongy type of material that goes over all of the trumpets (?)

That's one way. Lots of hot air to breathe though, so some folks run a hose to dump cold air in the vicinity.

A better way might be to add a plenum fed by a large duct which then allows the use of more conventional air filtration. This is what BMW does on the M cars.

Individual TBs would help the S2K whether head work was done or not. Slight output increase and noticeably better/faster throttle response would result if well designed.

Here are some pics...the big red box thing is the plenum:

Cool, a racing SLIDE throttle...no thottle plates to block the air:

The plenum covers the trumpets and attaches to the flange...the diameter and length of the trumpets is v. important...the trumpets live in the plenum and sadly are hidden from view:
