Default Possible Oil/Vtec Solenoid issue ?

I just picked up my s2k about 2 and a half months ago. car ran like a dream for awhile then all of a sudden it starts breaking up really bad when i get into vtec and bogging down. The car drives fine around town as long as i don't hit VTEC. A very respectable mechanic said that i should start running 5w30 oil in my car instead of 10w30 especially in the winter and that my solenoid is probably getting clogged from the oil being too thick. granted im a little overdue for an oil change but its been snowing so much i have no where to do it.

also sometimes coming to s top the car will idle down real low for a second and the oil light will flicker then it jumps back up to normal idle and is fine.

anyone have any idea ?

im changing the oil this weekend and replacing my plugs in case that may have something to do with the VTEC breaking up. please halp!!

don't know about the oil being too thick to clog the vtec solenoid but if it makes you feel better, go through the changes you noted and change out the vtec solenoid filter/screen while changing your oil (it will be easier and less messy if you do it while all the engine oil is out).

if you have it out you should change it because the screen is embedded in a rubber gasket that prevents oil leaks from the solenoid. the gasket gets old and hard after time and should be replaced for a proper seal.

in colder climate times I would a run 5W30 or 0W30

the Difference between 5W and 10W isn't like water and molasses. It just helps with initial startup, especially in colder climates. So I don't think you're destroying anything especially since they are the same weight when the car is warmed up!

Just don't vtec when the car is cold, wait a few minutes.

Also check the Map sensor as indicated

I believe if you find metal in the vtec solenoid screen, you have bigger problems to worry about

i have a 17-year old d16z6 with the original screen. a good cleaning is more than sufficient.

i would also suggest a map whack.
