Possible Output shaft bearing failing (videos)
I have been getting some very subtle gear whine at speed so I pulled the center console, insulation and rubber boot to get a better indication where it was coming from. With the cover remove the transmission absolutely screamed and I am fairly certain the output shaft bearings are making the noise. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Symptoms:
- Pitch of sound changes based only on speed
- Switching to neutral while moving has no impact on sound.
- A general roar sounding similar to road noise as you increase speed.
Background
- 2002 AP1 - 80k Miles
- Car never tracked
- Transmission oil changed every 10k
- No modifications.
Here are a few videos that really only capture the audio:
Note: the sound is 10x worse because the console is removed.
The transmission was put into neutral at :38 second mark and you can hear only the whine of the bearing as the car slows from 45mph to 0.
Transmission was put into neutral at :29 second mark as the car slowed back to a stop to avoid additional engine/background noise.
Higher speed run
I have done a ton of research on this so far and it would just make me feel better to have some others confirm my findings that I am on the right track.
