problem with a 04 s2k
i am a newb with cars and i have a question that would like to answered.
everytime when i first start the car, it seems that 2nd and 3rd gear doesnt want to go in its place. something is grinding whenever i put my shifter into a gear. note that this only happens when i first start the car. after minutes of driving it stops grinding and gears all go smoothly in place like it should. could it be the tranny oil?....or what?????

Since you are new to cars and to the S2000, you might want to find other S2000s in your area and have a couple of the other owners take your car for a drive. What you call a grind may in fact be just a bit of notchiness that is completely normal and is something that you may get accustomed to or even eliminate with more experience.
The S2000 gearbox is very precise and clutch/throttle/shifter coordination and syncronization is very important when operating it. This is not saying that there might be something wrong with your car, however, this is unlikely and until you get an experienced owner's assessment, you won't know for sure.

hm...interesting. well i got this car used with 2000 miles. lady talked like she didnt know how to drive stick. well, imma take it to honda this friday and find out more. tahnks man
Interesting....there can definately be some notchiness when it's cold in 2nd but I've never had a problem with 3rd. How many miles do you have on it now? A tranny fluid change *may* help, but it depends. One local guy was having tranny issues until we changed the fluid to GM Synchromesh. Now his tranny feels much better to hime(but honestly it didn't feel THAT bad to be in the begining, just a little more notchy) Sometimes it's just shifting technique.

had the same problem with my old '02 wrx and got freaked out.
try changing the trans. fluid, or better yet just live with it. it's normal, car just needs to be warmed up.
oh and mine does it too, and so does my brothers. he got freaked out too, but told him the situation.

I read another post somewhere in S2ki where the driver was complaining of the same "notchiness"... It turns out, after lengthy posting, that his shifting points were way lower than what Honda suggests in the manual. I don't know the shift speeds and RPMs off the top of my head, but you might want to check your Honda Manual and look up the shifting points.
I have an 04 also. ... I just recently changed the transmission fluid to GM Synchromesh Friction Modified and the cold tranny notchiness is lessened.
1. Review suggested shifting points.
2. Consider new MTF. I give a thumbs up to GMSMFM

... One more thing.
I had to address my shifting recently as well. I was experiencing excessive notchiness because I was not shifting quickly. I mean I'd take my time moving the shifter to the next gear. Now it's clutch all the way in... move the shifter to the next position shortly, and quickly out with the clutch. Bada-bing. Shifting technique improved. So, now I'm driving my stook like a sports car. Previously I had a full-size truck for over 13 years. Different shifting technique there!
