Default Pulled a code, let's talk about it...

So I pulled a code today and got 9 long 0 short. Turned out to be (as far as I could tell) the "P0442 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Small Leak Detected" code. So now I ask you....

Could this be my gas cap being faulty? aka the little spring loaded valve being messed up? Or what could it be?

Also, I've been going through oil in the car likes it's my job. 2 Quarts in 2 weeks. It's not burning (no smoke at least) but I'm getting massive carbon buildups on the tail pipes over time. No leak is apparent either.

Your thoughts?

Don't know what 9-0 blinks means or how you converted that to a P0442 or how you figured this is an EVAP code.

EVAP code for fuel system leak (usually gas cap or filler neck) is a P1456.

2 Quarts in 2 weeks.
This can mean something or it can mean nothing. It's the miles you travelled during this oil useage that's the key. If you just drove down to the corner store a couple blocks away a few times during those 2 weeks, then this should freak you out. If, during those 2 weeks, you drove over 2000 miles, then maybe it's not such a huge deal.

xviper, he got 9-0 from http://www.modifry.com/freebies/old/dtc/index.htm i think.

anyway on page 11-6 of the Fuel and Emmissions Systems DTC code index, I don't see a P0442 listed. There is a P1456 titled "Leak Detected in EVAp Control System (fuel tank system) on page 11-126 and P1457 Leak detected in EVAP Control System (EVAP control canister system) on page 11-130.

page numbers from the 2000 S2000 Helm Service Manual

You may want to get the DTC checked by a code reader. I was looking for your DTC in the Helms and the (90) should be DTC P1456 or P1457. Where is the conversion from 9-0 blinks to P0442? I could not find it in the Helms or the Honda TSB on DTC's.

EDIT: I have looked in the Helm's, Honda's DTC TSB (Which does have DTC P0442), and Modifry's link, I still can not figure out how 9-0 blinks translates to P0442.

These "blink codes" are in a thread stickied at the top of UTH. I checked. There is no "9-0" listed. There lies my confusion. The only blink code for anything to do with EVAP is a "9-2".

In the Helms they translate 9-0 blinks to DTC P1456 or P1457.

I don't have a link, but it's like 200K if you want me to e-mail it I'd be happy to.

just go to autozone (or where ever) and get the full code...

it's free and will tell you w/out "code convertion confusion".

Maybe its the MIL indication? Per my Haynes manual, P1456 (90) Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) Control System (see page 11,135) ?
