Default Pushing starter while engine is running...?

Ack, because of bad habit I pressed the start button thinking it was going to shut off the car (second time this happened already) and you hear that "ZCHZHCHZHCCH" sound of seemingly something getting meshed up. I know to be more conscious but with all these start/stop cars that kill the engine when you do it, sometimes your mind slips.

Is there any concern for damage that I should be checking or thinking about? How bad is it to do that? I've only pressed it for no more than 1/2 a second before I realized what I was doing.

Also, anybody want to come up with a way to prevent this...maybe like a cover similiar to what the new Lambo has...?

My buddies wife does this sometimes bc that's the way her Mini works. It could cause damage as if I understand correctly the starter teeth are trying to engage a fast moving flywheel.

if you did it once, i wouldn't worry about it. if press it everyday, and hold the button down, i'm sure you're break something eventually, but for one push, i wouldn't worry about it.

Ive done it a few times by accident, i dont think a few times is any issue to worry about. id liken it to grinding transmission gears when missing a shift, ya dont do it, but dont loose sleep over it either

you will likely damage the gears on the starter. As for the flywheel, its strong so it wont hard it.

Don't worry about it. I know a retarded girl that does that every time she turns on her car - leaves the key turned until that noise starts before she lets go. Her car still works and it's been over 2 years. lol

Yup, its equivalent to turning a key while a regular car is running. Its not good for the car, but it certainly wont destroy anything major if done in small amounts.

It seems like with every other dumb little automated thing in the car/safety that Honda would have engineered the start button to only work when the engine is not running under it's own power.

Maybe make it stop working at anything greater than 600rpm...

You can crank the starter while the car is running on every key start car from '99 or before I've seen. I don't see why they should expect S2000 drivers to be that much more stupid.

Owning a specific car, or home, or pair of shoes does not separate you from the statistics of being human.

A person's vehicle preference does not change his or her intelligence or aptitude. The percentage of less than average intelligence S2000 owners is probably about the same as the percentage of less than intelligent corvette owners, and probably not far from even Civic or Ford F150 owners.

A separate issue, but accidentally pushing the engine start button three times for the entire time a person owns the car (if you are capable of not crashing a car over the course of five-six years) does not classify him or her as stupid; It classifies him or her as a human that has made a few mistakes.
