Default Quick question about odometers

Is the memory in the cluster itself or the main computer?

TIA

I've seem this question a few times. The miles are recorded on the odometer. Not in the ECU, well it might be in the ECU but it doesn't effect what's displayed on the odometer. How can I be sure you ask? Because I've switched my ECU between stock and Mugen a dozen times and the mileage always remains.

That's exactly why I asked. Thanks.

Does this mean that the gauge cluster retains the odometer reading in non-volatile memory? That would explain how the mileage "follows" the car independent of ECU changes.

BTW, just like in the old days of mechanical odometers, there are professional electronic gauge tamperers. "Rollback men" have been replaced by computer aces with a laptop - apparently, a few connections, or even through access via the ALDL or ODBII connectors, they can access and change the odometer reading to whatever you tell them - for a fee. Unscrupulous used-car dealers are their main employers.

Just as in th old days, caveat emptor. If the car says 5000 miles, and is riding on a set of Ecsta's, a yellow flag should go up. Or the brake pads are severely worn. Or the seat cushions have signs of age. That kind of stuff. Listen to those little hairs at the base of your neck - they are there to save your azz.
