Default Odometer question???

Where is the milage for the odometer stored? The ECU or the gauge cluster itself?

Its stored in the guage console. I remember a thread a long time ago where someone had to have their guage cluster replaced and when he got it back the mileage was 00000

Really....That kinda sucks. I was thinking of picking up a cluster from a totaled S2k to change the colors in the display but it has twice as many miles on it. Jeez what would keep some one from getting a new cluster ever couple years and say "low milage car" I think that storing it on the cluster is a big mistake. I would have figured it was in the kept in the ECU. Is there a way to sync up a new cluster to show my true milage.

Yeah that is me...Mr Boyscout I am just concerned since I want to modify the dash but I don't want to do it to the orginal. I keep all the stock parts I take off just in case I ever sell it I can put it back to stock condition. This sort of throws a wrench in the plans. If I put the other cluster in I gain 10k miles without going anywhere and then if after a few years I put the stock one back in it will be way lower. Lose 10k in warranty miles by switching then get hit for odometer fraud later Neither is what I want to do. Is there a way to just swap the odometer part between the two or is it all one unit???
