I have the Mugen Header and Exhaust, and, only the stock air intake.

Since I'd like to maximize the performance gains, I think I need to complete the whole I/H/E combo, but am not really crazy about the loud 'honking' sound the AEM makes (the only one I've heard)

What's the quietest Air Intake?

Do the snorkel types (Spoon, Mugen) work as well or are they more quiet? The same?

I would think the PRM is probably as loud as the AEM.

Anyone have an answer to this question? Thanks!

 

I have a spoon knockoff. It is quiet and much cheaper than Mugen. Since you have everything Mugen, get the Mugen intake and ECU. Snorkel type intakes alone do not gain much if anything. They just improve throttle response.

 

I agree with reds2, if you have a mugen exhaust and header, go with the mugen intake and even the ecu when you get the cash.

If you can't afford that, I would probably go for the Comptech CAI >$300, the only others that would give a possible increase and stay in your noise limits would probably be Mugen or J's if you want to spend over 1k.

 

How does the Mugen snorkel intake sound? It is really pricey though, and I'm not convinced I want to go there for a piece of carbon fibre.

 

Unless you like looking for racing fuel stay clear on the Mugen ECU. The ECU requires high octane to work it's wonders. I have the IDI snorkle and comtech filter. It is quiet and works well.

 

I'm not interested in the Mugen ECU.

Sound: The intake snorkels do not change the sound from stock. The AEM-style CAI's are significantly louder than stock, esp. at WOT above 4000 rpm. To my ear, it's not at all obnoxious, however; it just makes the car sound a little "meaner".
Performance: The snorkels are not as free-breathing, but arguably have more of a ram-air effect at speed. They will not show improvement on the dyno (where the car is stationary), whereas the AEM-style CAIs will.

 

My emphasis on 'sound' is because I enjoy the sound of the Mugen Exhaust (or what you can hear of it) and don't want to change the car's primary sound from an exhaust sound to an intake sound.

If the snorkel types are close to stock, I may go for that.

 

I used to have the aem and now have the mugen. I have the header and exhaust too. Combined, its all quiet compared to the aem. Also, although not backed by dyno #'s my butt felt a much stronger pull with the Mugen than the AEM.
