Default The Rattle from Hell!

Hey Guys,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, so if its not, i apologize.

I have the worst rattle that comes from inside my dash.. It dosent make a noise when the car is cold, and sounds to be coming from above the transmission.

It rattles when i rev the engine, but not at idle... it also rattles while i'm cruising. It sounds like a bolt is loose and is rattling with the vibrations from the motor...

I tried hitting the exhaust shields and i couldnt hear any rattle... as well as most of the undercarriage. Please please help me... has anyone else had an issue like this

Just a stab in the dark. Did you ever lose your oil fill cap and have to replace it?

The rattle you might be experiencing might be the infamous Clutch Buzz that was common in the 2000 and 2001 model year. You'll get this "buzz" when you decelerate while in gear. The sound is very apparent when decelerating at about 3000-3500 rpms. If this is your problem, then the only fix that I know of is to replace the clutch friction disc with a newer model one.

I love that line...

Everytime i talk to somone about a rattle or take my car (god help me) to the dealer they give me the oil cap line. Wouldn't the smell of burning oil all over your motor and it eventually locking up be more of an issue

Thanks not busting anyone's nuts...

It is very common for the oil cap to be found on top of the gear box in this car (well, not VERY common but it has been posted about fairly regularly).

Another idea to check would be the bolts on/around the shifter on top of the trans. I had that problem in my truck. One nut worked loose and would buzz when the engine was running.

Has anything in the dash been serviced lately? The clips holding the passenger side lower dash panel in place (where the glovebox would be in most cars) can be broken if its not removed correctly, then an edge of the panel can rattle after its put back on. Its a hard rattle to locate if you don't about it.

It happened to me and Hardtop Guy found the cause and sold me a new panel.

i got this used... and it has a non-oem oil cap... it has pretty much done this since i got it, so its worth having a look to see if its fallen down onto the transmisson... Now how would i go about checking to see if it fell onto the tranny?

The car also has a vibration from the tranny on deceleration (these are two very different sounds)... it has 34K miles but is an '01... do you think i could get honda to replace it for free? does a good will claim ever happen?

If there was a oil cap on top of the tranny, you'll probably won't be able to see it. People have had some success in fishing out the oil cap by using a clothes hanger and prodding around between the back of the engine and the firewall. It's a pain in the butt, but it does the job. It'll be interesting although you're not the first to complain about a vibration and it turned out to be an oil cap.
