Default Rattle and Shake S2k

Hi everyone,

Im new to the site and I love it!

Im in Australia and just bought a used 00 S2000. No mods really apart from 19" wheels (which I will be taking off, damn rubbing drives me up the wall), whats the point in looking good if you cant drive the thing with any speed over even the smallest bumps! Im getting a Vortech Supercharger kit next week.....cant wait!

Anyway...the point of this post. The car rattles and shakes. The shakes occur from the rear when I am accelerating hard from about 4000RPM and up in all gears. From the very detailed threads on here I think it must be my inner cv joints, it feels like maybe both driver and passenger sides are damaged. Just wanted to know what I should do from here? Ill take both joints off the car, if faulty should I just swap the driver side to the passenger side and vice versa like I saw on one of the threads? Or am I better off replacing both of them with new ones? I rang Honda down here and theywant $550 for each inner CV!

Another issue is when Im driving above the speed of 45 km/hr, if I lift my foot off the gas there is a rattle or tinny sort of noise that comes from the middle of the engine bay or dash area. If I just lean my foot slighly on the gas it goes away and happens again when I release my foot. Im guessing this could be the clutch? I checked the heat shields but all seem secured well. Seeing Im getting a Vortech SC it is probably best if I get a heavier duty clutch anyway!

Didnt realise the S2000 had so many issues! I have had a VTI Civic and a 95 CRX in the past and I never had any major issues with them and i drove them hard.

Thanks to everyone on the site, once again.... What a great site and resource!!!

Regards

The shakes you describe sounds exactly like the inner CV joint issue. Switching from side to side should do the trick. I did the swap and she's been driving smooth as silk ever since. Or you can do as some others have and buy the 2 piece halfshaft spacers...

The rattle sounds like the clutch buzz. I had it on my stock clutch setup. When I bought the HTG clutch kit, the buzz has pretty much gone away. It comes back every now and then but it's pretty rare.

That might explain a bit...

Unfortunately no matter how reliable a car is, 8 years is more than enough time to neglect maintenance to cause owners some issues.

I have an 00 model as well and it has its squeaks and creaks...

I might suggest getting the maintenance done before supercharging it.

welcome and good luck

One thing on the vibration...it is likely the CVs...but before spending a lot of time swapping from side to side, you might try changing the wheels first. If they are so big that they are rubbing (and 19s are HUGE)...the vibration may be from them rubbing too. There is rear bumper mount that frequently rubs on waaaay oversized wheels. During acceleration it would make that rubbing worse.

Thanks everybody for all your inputs.

Pulled the 2 inner cv joints off the car and definately worn. Bought them down to a specialist cv joint place and they are going to recondition and remachine them. Apparently the grease that Honda uses on the joints are way below par as well, so that will get addressed.

Yeah , wheels are wayyyyy too big. Will be taking them off and going back to 17s. What width of wheel do you guys recommend and what size tyre? The guards have already been rolled.

Cheers
