Default Rattling from the cat

Hello all,
So i've been hearing a rattling noise from my car for quite some time now and it sounded as if it was the catalytic converter. So I took the heat shield surrounding it off and the ceramic inside came crumbling out. Do you think that was the noise I heard? Anyway, I couldn't do much from there so i bolted the shield back on with no ceramic lining. Do you think this will cause any problems? Also, do you have any suggestions as to what i can do now because the heatshield bolted up without the ceramic iseems just as noisy. Any help would be hugely appreciated!

-Thanks
Matt (MAS2)

i just started getting a rapid vibration chattering from the rear at certain rpm only sometimes. this started immediately after i unplugged my tow hitch plugs (for the first time ever) and cleared out the old wax stuck in there. however, the sound is definitely metallic and i'm pretty sure the tow plug isn't. not to hijack your thread but maybe we can both get answers.

you wont get rattling from the heat shield on the cat even without that linning. My cat was rattiling bad and what happens is the honeycomb can actually break inside the cat and be very loud, and what will eventually happen is it will break the tip off your 02 sensor, which will throw a code. So you should start looking for a second hand cat because unfortunatley those are very expensive for our cars.

broken bits of catalic converter hoeycomb can travel down the exhaust pipe and get trapped on the mufflers, therefore, causing a rattling in the mufflers.

Time for a new one, it sounds like. Check the warranty. The catalytic converter is warrantied for longer than the rest of the car.
