rattling in diff = broken?
I just received a diff that I purchased from a member here on S2ki. First, the diff came in just a thin half broken cardboard box with peanuts. Then when I took it out of the box I noticed that I could hear something rattling around inside. It has no fluid in it, but does this mean its broken?
Thanks

hmmm, it shouldnt make any rattling noise at all. also, when you spin the hubs, spin them in opposite directions, they should be smooth with no binding at all.
it should have been shipped truck freight, tied down, not in a box with packy fluffs.
any Q's ask.

How do you notice the rattle?
If you do when turning the output shafts.. it COULD be "just" the Torsen gears spinning without oil.
They make a clicking "rattle" when you spin them without oil.
Mine did when I cleaned it out with kerosine.
A drop of oil = no noise.
Why ship it without oil?
Less weight?
Not allowed?

When I flipped it over I noticed that something inside was rattling around. No idea why he shipped it with no fluid but it had no fill plug either... It also took him over 2.5 weeks to ship. I am going to see if he will get back to me before I post a name.

There can be a hazmat issue with oil. If the rear leaks during shipping the shipping Co. may not ship it but, place it in a holding area.

There is nothing wrong with shipping a rear diff in a cardboard box, Honda ships them that way and so do I. FedEx. UPS, and US Mail are all fine to use. It must be packaged well with good protection. When I ship one It can be dropped from a 6

True, but not with foam peanuts.
The diff should be fixed inside the box.

send my diff core in a box, there was a foam "sabot" (MythBusters : Chicken Gun
) to stop the core from moving around.
Worked perfectly, I used it to send my core back.

A box with peanuts =
IMO.
IMO, the shipper needs to compensate the broken parts due to improper shipping.

and the only thing you will need to put it back together is Hondabound.
