reading DTC codes without a tester
Is there a way to read engine codes without one of the PGM/OBDII testers? The Helms manual shows that you can get codes for the SRS system via the idiot light and suggests that you can for engine codes if the tester is used to short out pins (I think it was called an SRS input to the ECU which shows up as one of the 5 pins listed for the OBDII connector)? I used this technique all the time to troubleshoot the ATTS on my '97 Prelude SH (of course, all it said was "Yep, it's broke!") and would think that it would be a great way for shade tree mechanics such as myself to not have to fork out the bucks for hardware.
Whatcha think? Anyone tried it?

OBD-II is a bit more complex then OBD-I (i.e. blink-blink). Minimal info will be able to be stripped blink-blink (i.e. system on or off). Why not put out 100 bucks and know exactly what's up with the car? In my opinion this is one of the greatest "upgrades" available.....

Utah,
I think the price on that software is decent, especially for all three models in one package, BUT, does anyone sell a handheld unit for a reasonable price? I don't want to lug a laptop out to the car everytime.
