Default Rear Diff.. maybe?

As I am driving I can hear a whining noise coming from the rear. At around 3,000 - 4,000 RPM is where it's the loudest. Is this the rear diff, or wheel bearings? The sound persists through acceleration (until it is drowned out) and deceleration, but tends to be gone above 4,000 rpm.

It does it in all gears? Same rpm range?
The wheels and diff are both on the other side of the gearbox.
They'll be turning at different speeds at 3000rpm in first than at same rpm in second.
If it happens in all gears at same rpm then I doubt it's either of these.
If it's road speed dependent it could be.

It seems to be the loudest in 6th gear. I will drive it tonight and get more information on when it does this sound. And in what gears & Neutral/In Gear.

It may be that it still makes the noise at higher rpms, but its drowned out by other noises, engine, etc.

It will only get worse and louder if it's your diff .. Check the fluid for metalic flakes

I will be doing a flush on Monday so I will be able to find out. The sound persists even out of gear but seems to be the loudest at 50-60 mph.
