Rear End "clicks"

Default Rear End "clicks"

I bought a stock MY04 with 22k miles this weekend. Drove it home 500 miles. As we got close to the end of our trip and started getting into stop and go traffic we heard "clicks" from the rear end. It was esspecially noticeable during both left and right turns. The previous owner hasn't changed fluids on the trans or diff. Any thoughts?

Thanks and prior to making this post I did do searches and came across the axle nut fix. But it seems that my situation is different that those from others who all sort of had one thing or another in common (ie coming to a stop, taking off and MY00-02). Has this carried over to the MY04 as well? Being that it has 22k on it and I've only owned it for 1 day therefore haven't fully dianosed it, could it be possible that I am expirencing some early signs of something major? If so, where do I start? Grease the axle nut and retorque it first? Where do I inspect the CV joints at? How do I test the integrity of the diff?

Sorry for all the newbie q's. Thanks in advance.

it is probably the cv joints.

don't really know how to test the integrity of the diff, but definitely change the diff fluid, and put in le-607.

It might be the CV's but i like to start with the cheapest things first. Get your axle nuts retourqed, then on to CV's and then the diff. Also inspect your rotors, calipers, pads and suspension.

Yes...it did carry over to the later cars. I've retightened 2 AP2s that had started clicking. As the nut backs off over time, the clicking becomes more frequent as you describe and eventually will become a squeal. Once you get to the squeal stage you will need to replace the wheel bearing and probably the hub.

Start with the axle nut first since it is the easiest and least costly...if you still have the clicking, then look at the CVs.

I have done this on 2006 cars as well.

If the nut has never been touched, it should come out tighter. Say from 12 oclock, it should be tightened to almost 2 oclock.

I did this a while back, i removed the old nuts and got new ones, torqed them to spec, and now its back again....... have you ever heard of them losing the torq after they have been re-torqed?

this is a really easy fix and i would suggest everyone do it. just kinda a pain to do it over.......

Blownap....if you used the same nut, check you nut timing. Should have moved two hours
