Default Rebuilding motor...

Ok so I'm not a master mechanic nor have I ever rebuilt a motor b4. He'll I just did my first valve adjustment last week on a single cam.

I've always heard of this term rebuilt motor being thrown around but not sure exactly what is being rebuilt. Can someone chime in to discuss exactly what is rebuilt or needs to be rebuilt Ina motor that has been retired. Thanks.

There are infinite answers to this question. Too vague.

bottom end? top end? whole deal? everything from rebuilding the head to rebuilding the entire bottome end from pistons bearings crank shaft rods blah blah blah. Most people don't tackle the bottom end as it has precise measurements that need to be dealt with.
