Default Removing Dynamat

Hi,

I have dynamat in the trunk done by the previous owner, and I prefer to save the weight and since I dont have stereo anyway, I might as well take it off.

How do I go about removing dynamat? Any specific chemicals or am I just gonna be picking at it for months?

Thanks.

Picking at it for years; not months.

Thanks for the replies. I thought there might be a fairly easy chemical way to taking this gunk off... if not then its not really worth my time and effort just for couple pounds...

looks like Ill have to upgrade near future.

i tried to take out that stuff before and it was difficult.. i used lots of degreaser spray and a hair dryer sset on hot to take it off. it was a battle!

someone on a prelude forum emailed dynamat and this was their official response:

Thank you for your interest in Dynamat. Removing Dynamat Xtreme is very difficult. (You have already found this out) I have outlined the steps for removing Dynamat Xtreme below. Please let us know if you have any additional question.

Dynamat Xtreme

Tools: Putty Knife, gloves, safety glasses

Method: Peel up a corner or edge of the material. Slowly pull the material off using the putty knife for assistance. Any butyl material (the black stuff) not removed by this method can be removed by using the removed material to stick to and remove. (Just as you might use scotch tape to remove lint from clothing) This process will take a lot of time.

---------------

but really, weight savings? imo, not that much that'll make a big difference. go take a dump before stepping into your s if it's that big of a concern

People use dry ice to freeze the old honda undercoating and chip it off. May be worth a shot.

Thanks for the replies, the black tar stuff does come off dry, but its also very hard to come off, I would be doing that dabbing method for... MONTHS...

Plus I kinda wanted to put my OEM wing back on, but realized now I cant, because the previous owner sealed up where the OE wing holes line up under the dynamat...

WHATS THE POINT OF A STEREO IF I CANT EVEN HEAR IT!!!

Yeah, biggest mistake of my life ever was to dynamat the previous car. That was epic massive mega fail.

If you're lucky, the previous owner did a poor application job and the dynamat is only lightly stuck on there. Give it a good tug and it should just "pop" off cleanly. If it's applied GOOD, then you're done for. you can pour googone on it, and it'll melt it, leaving a sticky messy black mess.

Good luck! you can do it with paitence and a big tub of elbow grease.
