The Craftsman impact driver is around $30 and will last you your whole lifetime. You can get waste time doing the job without it any number of times, or just go buy it and never have to worry.
The Craftsman is 1/2" square drive and uses 5/16" hex bits which are stronger than the 1/4" hex. You need a number 3 Phillips bit for the rotor screws; that will cost a couple of bucks more if it doesn't come with the impact driver.
But ya these screws are no longer needed after you remove it, the lug and the rim holds the rotors in place, but these screws were needed for assembly purposes.
I like to have the rotors firmly held whenever I'm doing a brake service on the pads, and pins, about once a year, or when I'm painting the calipers or bleeding the brakes etc.... When the car is on jacks with the wheels removed I will turn the steering rack left and right by hand just using the rotors without dirtying my steering wheel, so I like to re-use the screws even if not necessary.
They are no longer needed, but like some have said, its more convenient to have them in place. But if anyone was to try to remove the rotors and didn't have the proper tools, destroying the screw would be perfectly OK. Then if needed, replace the screw.
thanks for thee advice everyone. i ended up borrowing my neighbors impact driver.the only thing is i messed up the screws and stripped one because the tip on the bit was worn.i just bought a new one at harbor freight for 6 bucks. since i was gonna get them resurface i grinding into the rotor so i could get them out. after all that work the shop said they were no good.so spent all day trying to find someone that had them in stock. didn't think i would go through as much trouble as i did but it was well worth it.was quoated $450 to get them done with parts and labor. instead i spent $140 and did it myself so with the extra money i saved im gonna buy my honda jacket
