Default Replaced Axle Nuts...

Well, tonight a buddy of mine that is a VW mechanic changed my diff fluid (had the car for 30k miles now and never did it, and who knows if it was done before, car now has 90k lol), and i also bought new axle nuts to put on since i thought that was why my rear was creaking so badly from a stop and low speeds. so far i've only heard it twice when usually i'd hear it 5x that much. am i missing something here? is there something else that makes this sound? search still down for me

My understanding is that the creaking/ticking at low speeds is from the axel splines moving in and out of the hub slightly due to the changes in suspension geometry. Replacing the hub nuts and torquing them to 220 lb-ft sometimes helps by holding things together more tightly, but the true resolution is to grease the splines a little bit.

This could also mean that one of your rear wheel bearings (and possibly your hubs also) are going out. I have about 70k on my car and I'm getting the creaking noises while coasting in neutral and the noise gets faster when speed increases. I plan to have my bearings serviced this weekend. If tightening and regreasing doesn't work, you might want to look into this. Parts cost me around $365. That includes 2 new rear bearings, 2 rear hubs, and 2 new axle nuts.

Good luck!

When you install the bearing will you need a shop press? or do they bolt on?

hmm nothing happens when i'm rolling. it's only at very low speeds, usually on a slight incline and when i drop the clutch from a start. this is driving me nuts and i don't have the money to go replacing everything i "think" it is lol

Is it a creek sound like a bed spring and does it make a sound when you go over bumps?

I hand a creaking sound on my S and I found out it was the hood and the hood latch.
