Replacement air filter
Your first thought is to get a piece of plastic to cover them right? Or maybe even put some fabric, foam in there....but there is a great solution!
Gorilla Glue
Its thick, and is really hard......dab some on there (it wont go through the hole) and let it sit, repeat this 2-3 times untill a nice formation has been created to seal all possible noise from getting out. As for modding the air box, i took out the filter, grabbed a hand saw and cut the wall thats between the filter, box intake. I then vaccumed all plastic debris up from the box, put filter on and sealed box. I laso have a carbon fiber radiater plate that goes up to the box intake, and a snorkal is being ordered as we speak.
1 month and no problems, did notice increase of responsiveness with the box cutout and mod.

I went with a k and N filter...not for gains but for the lifetime reusability. I also bored out the airbox, took out that wall, and coverd the sound restrictors. I have a carbon fiber plate that lopes over teh airbox intake and gets all air from radiator area....now just to get the snorkal!.
I'm not saying that you're ruining your engine, just that this air filter is controversial.

I suggest that you consider getting a Used Oil Analysis done on your oil when you do an oil change sometime. You may find that you will have higher silicon levels in your oil, as well as higher wear metal readings. The K&N filter has a reputation of letting more dirt into your engine, increasing wear. This has been discussed ad nauseum at Bobistheoilguy.com.

Its not a show car, and even if it was i wouldt be alarmed at .000200525% increase in wear and tear. By the time my 00' starts seeing signifigant signs of KnN wear i will be in my Ap5 in the year 2045. If i cared that much about "sillicon" readings barely increasing, i wouldnt even take it on the road for fear of getting a hair on the hood.
Of course its letting more stuff in, its letting more in as well! Did you know that the process of breathing 02 makes us age and puts wear and tear on our cells? You dont see me or anyone else freaking out....
I hope i never become as anal as you!

i have the k&n drop in, it works, perhaps i have noticed a slight improvementin throttle response, perhaps not....meaning your mileage may vary. I did not do this to gain hp, but i like the k&n, have had them in many cars over the years and they pay for themselves if you clean them and resuse them as designed. increased wear on engine....who knows, deminished engine life....who knows. worthwhile mod imh0.
