Default Replacing AP1 valve retainers/keepers. What else while I'm in there?

Hey all. I'm planning out my Winter projects, and need to tap your collective knowledge. I have a 2000 AP1, and am going to be replacing the valve stems and keepers. What else can I do while I'm in there? I don't intend to be moving away from the stock springs, though I may in the future supercharge the engine. I'll be replacing the valve seals at the same time, along with the valve cover gasket. Any opinions on aftermarket valve seals or valve cover gaskets?

While I am in there, is there anything else I should be looking at or doing? I don't want to be opening my engine too often, after all. I already replaced the TCT.

Default Valve Job

It might be worthwhile to have a valve adjustment first do about 10% of that cost.

the valve adjustment has to be done, as he'll be loosening up all the rockers.

OP. Use Genuine Honda seals/gaskets. Don't go aftermarket.

Its good you're going with factory springs as well. There's absolutely no reason to change anything in this head...except for using factory AP2 retainers/keepers.

Keep it stock. Don't go aftermarket.

I just did this on my 2000. Big job, but satisfying once it's done! Here's what I did:

- Spark plugs, NGK 7772 PFR7G-11S Laser Platinum, torque to 21-24 lb-ft (!)
- Spark plug tube seals, Honda OEM, 12342-PCX-004
- Valve cover gasket kit, Honda OEM, 12040-PCX-305
- Valve spring retainers and keepers, AP2, intake side only, 14765-PRB-A01 (8), and 14781-PCX-004 (16)
- Valve adjustment

I watched the DIYGuys videos on YouTube, which are excellent. You could also replace your PCV valve if it's never been done or you don't know.

Thanks everyone for the tips. Especially appreciate the part numbers from Save the Manual Wagons.

I'm going to be DIY'ing this, just wanted to get a parts list in order before I pull the trigger.

Thanks again!

Don't forget the tool list. I bought the following:

- Bent feeler gauges
Amazon Amazon

- Valve adjustment tool:
Amazon Amazon

- Valve keeper removal tool:
Amazon Amazon

- Valve spring compressor (needs to be modified): https://www.ebay.com/itm/353790326479

Still a lot cheaper than paying someone (who will probably screw it up, based on my experiences with mechanics...)

I also finally broke down and bought a 1/4" torque wrench. Not that I absolutely needed one for this job, but I did use it. And it'll be nice to have in the future.

One more question: I am having trouble finding valve seals. Does anyone have a part number for them?

EDIT: Never mind, found 'em.

For reference:

Seal "A", Valve Stem (intake valve) - 12210-PZ1-004
Seal "B", Valve Stem (exhaust valve) - 12211-PZ1-004

I'm going to do all the retainers. I know I've over-revved this thing at least once (5th to 2nd @ 90MPH). I'm not doing this again, and I don't see a good reason to leave them. Especially since I'm going to be replacing the valve seals anyway.

Code:
Part Number Part Name Price Quantity Total
14765-PRB-A01 Retainer, Valve Spring $4.18 16 $66.88
12342-PCX-004 Seal, Spark Plug Tube (Nok) $4.44 4 $17.76
12040-PCX-305 Gasket Set, Head Cover $44.67 1 $44.67
14781-PCX-004 Cotter, Valve (Sankoru) $3.70 32 $118.40
12210-PZ1-004 Seal A, Valve Stem (Nok) $1.60 8 $12.80
12211-PZ1-004 Seal B, Valve Stem (Nok) $1.60 8 $12.80
17130-PV3-013 Valve Assembly, PCV $22.04 1 $22.04
