when the unit is installed, it's installed to certain tolerances or specs. These specs aren't permanent and can change until a certain number of heat cycles where things settle in there. That's why you don't want to drive the car hard and want to let things heat cycle normally and gradually get them to the point where you are shifting faster and inducing more heat to the rear end. I would say that 2 tank fulls of gas in terms of milage (driving on the hwy at steady speed doesn't really count, more like city miles) should be an adequte amount of miles to consider the gears "broken in." Remember it's not the metal of the gears that needs heat cycling but the entire unit as a whole as it's assembled with bolts and nuts to specific tolerances. Too much heat will cause things to expand in there and change the clearances as the metal expands under heat.

I just, and I mean just ( my fingers are still greasy) finished the 4:77 install on my car. I dropped the diff and brought it to a pro to do the ring & pinion install. Just put the diff back in tonight and did my first 7 mile heat cycle. I found the same post on the net about the oil temp and I am convinced the more I read on the topic that proper break in is critical. I will be doing several short heat cycles tomorrow and take it real easy for a few hundred miles. I will repost when it's safe to romp on it with my impressions. The installed only charged me $ 100 , Yes he is a pro and has done lots of Ring & pinions setups

I got the last 4.44 and they are being installed now, along with the tranny/clutch TSBs being done....can't wait to get the car back. Rick and Strat, I hope the deal goes through. If it does, that will be great!

Is that deal just going to be on the 4.44's or will it encompass the 4.77's too ??
