Default Rough Idle/Stalling

So my buddy just picked up a 2000 s2000 with about 72k on it, it has no CELs at all however sometimes it will stall out after being started (cold start), other times the rpms will drop way below normal idleing levels and sometimes stall out when he comes out of gear and comes off the gas like rolling to a stop light. We found some old gas reciptes from the past owner and it showed they were running 87 regular unleaded gasoline in it. Could this be the cause of it? I have already cleaned his throttle body, checked the throttle cable, added some fuel injector cleaner and he is now on his second full tank of premium 91 octane gas, however the issues still come up. I have read some other posts and some have suggested a valve adjustment. Can anyone else add any suggestions or advise, would be much appreciated!

Your advice is from left field and not even close. Guessing doesnt help anyone.

An s2k will not run at all if the cams are off even one tooth.

First thing I would do is pull off the IAC valve and clean it.

I personally have had the timing on my cams off more than 1 tooth and it started, it just ran like crap.

Here's another thread w/ the timing being the issue. Car starts.

There's also plenty of videos of people who had timing off on their cars and it starts and runs but just runs like crap.

But the reason why I said check the timing was how AP2NV described the rpm's jumping and stalling was pretty much how I came to figure out the timing on my car was bad (because I incorrectly installed the cams).

i used to deal with this issue often in my old turbo accord.

OP - clean it out with come carb cleaner or let it soak in soapy water and rinse it clean. just make sure to pull the sensor off.

Don't want to jinx it but after cleaning both the map sensor and iacv with carb cleaner and also doing a seafoam treatment the car seems to be running much better throughout the rev range and different stop and go scenarios. Also reset the ecu, hope this stays fixed haha, thanks again everyone

Could a clogged cat be the problem?

Stock PCM equipped 00-05 S2k's will not start with the cam timing off. 06 and later cars may be different.

This has been proven several times with 00-05 cars.
