Default S2000 Engine Rebuilds

Hiya Guys

Looking into getting a full rebuild but an a little hesitant. After doing some research, have stumbled across numerous posts all stating that the F20C/F22C engine is difficult to rebuild & would only trust a handful of engine builders to undertake the task.

My question is, what is it that makes it so difficult to rebuild & why do so many F20C/F22C engines have a short lifespan following a rebuild (with exception of a few builders). Is there a common mistake builders are making or any dos & donts when rebuilding an S2000 engine? Havent come accross an answear to this & would be very intrested to know why.

Cheere guys

I don't have any personal experience here, but the first things that come to mind: FRP cylinder bores which require special tooling to hone, very tight tolerances (how many other engines go to 8.4/9k), a tedious and time consuming bearing selection process that many builders likely ignore (I had this experience with a B series motor years ago). I'm sure there are some others though. I'm also interested to hear other answers to this.

Yup, those are the two big ones, frm cylinders and multiple sizes of bearings that have to be measured, and selected.

Some resleeve the cylinders with iron liners, but then you negate the advantages of the frm coating.

If the frm cylinders aren't worn too far, you can just hone them, but it takes a special technique. Someone that doesn't know better could end up destroying the coating.

I rebuilt my motor. I ended up sending the short block out to get sleeved.
In the end it was not really that bad. The machine shop honed the cylinders as well.
I ended up putting new pistons and con rods. Just go slow and you'll be fine.
I suggest replacing the chain and guides as well. I also put ARP head bolts in.
You'll have a very stout motor.
