Default s2k gearbox and clutch durability?

Hi, im in the market for an s2k at the moment, driven a few of varying age and mileage.

Now, one of the salesmen at a dealership told me it would be wise to take out an extended insurance warranty deal when buying a 2nd hand s2k because he said that some previous s2k's they sold needed a gbox and clutch replacement (he reckons a few grand worth of repairs/replacement)

What i want to know is, how far is he stretching the truth?
Are earlier model (99-02) s2k gearbox's that vunerable if they have been pushed hard all their life?

I anticipate to pick up one with about 60000km (37000miles) on the clock, so would there be any need to worry about replacing the gearbox and clutch if its been given a good thrashing for the best part of 60000km (35000 miles)?

cheers

There is another thread going on right at the moment where such work has been DENIED on an extended warranty. People are considering cashing in their extended warranties because they are not the same as the Honda manufacturers warranty. Any and all modifications to the car will void this warranty.
Clutches are considered "wear" items and are not generally covered and tranny damage have been attributed to "owner abuse". You might want to get the coverage specific to you put in writing. Your salesman is just trying to make a few extra bucks.

thanks for the info

the warranty insurance is pretty comprehensive, its like $1000 for 3 years but they say they will replace anything and everything... then again there is always the fine print to read over before signing up for anything i guess.

ultimately, i just want to know if its common for s2k's to have gearboxes and clutches replaced anytime soon after 60000km (35000 miles)? or is he just stretching the truth a little too far?
perhaps enough for me to fall into the trap and open my wallet for another $1000?

You may want to look at Car Buying Tips and check their link to aftermarket warranties. They list a couple of companies that are supposed to be pretty reputable. I don't know what they'll do for a used car but it certainly can't hurt to give them a call and ask.

While I've not personally had any signficant issues with Honda Care, I've heard too many stories about them denying coverage and I have personally had them start making excuses for why they "might not" cover what I consider a legitimate claim even though they ultimately "did" cover that claim. I simply don't like them automatically starting on the negative note. I bought Honda Care on my 01 Odyssey but because of the negative attitude they seem to have with regards to the extended warranty, I went with Warranty Direct (which is listed on the link posted above) for my 04 S2000. Time will tell if I made a good decision on that one or not.

Best of luck,
Steve R.
