Scanner problem
I have an Actron CP9580 Autoscanner Plus. I recently got a CEL and tried to read the code with my scanner, but was unable to. It recognized the vehicle as a 2004 S2000, but couldn't link with the engine module ("Link Fail, check connections"). After several tries, I decided to just reset the ECU because it was for a loose fuel cap (it was loose).
This scan tool has worked great for me in the past on this vehicle. It still works with my 2000 Tundra. A few things that I can remember happening since it last worked well with my S2000:
-State inspection which required emmisions scan. It worked with their scanner, and it passed the inspection.
-Had a local shop replace O2 sensors and clutch master cylinder (C&C Northside in Houston). I took it back to them on Thursday and asked them to troubleshoot. Curt hooked up his scanner and had trouble at first, but was able to get data using Global mode. He said he has had some trouble recently on other cars with his scanner. A common denominator was we both had done software updates on our tools (his was a different brand). My update included 2009 model year vehicles, as I suspect his did too.
-I called Actron tech support to discuss the possibility of a software glitch, and he said everything points to a car issue and not software. He told me to check the OBDII pinout for grounds on pins 4,5, and 16. But I have no idea what he was talking about.
Has anyone else had problems linking with the S2000 since downloading a software update, or for any reason? Any ideas on how to fix this problem?
Thanks!

Well.. as it worked before the pinout itself is not it.
Did you - or do you think someone else - ever used a paperclip or something to reset the ECU?
Maybe the contacts in the OBDII plug are out of shape?
Try it on another S2k?
As far as I understand (reading the website) the updating software downloads the latest version by itself without any selection possible.
Try updating it again?
You have the 4A14 software?
Force it too, even if it shows the latest software is there - if possible.

Inspect the pins in the scanner plug. One might be bent just enough to not make a good insertion. Also check the OBD II port on the car to make sure it looks OK. While checking for codes on another local S2000 last year, one of the pins in the scanner plug got bent slightly.
The only one who has reset the ECU is me, via the negative battery terminal.
The only person to use a scanner besides me is the inspection shop last June.
I erased and downloaded the latest update (CP9580 5/10/12) today. I will check it again in the morning.
None of the pins on my tool plug look bent. But there are two center pins in the bottom (wide) row that protrude more than the others. But I don't know if that's unusual or not.
I'm not sure how to inspect the OBDII plug, since everything is reccessed. Any suggestions?
I will try to coordinate with another S2000 owner at Texas World Speedway sometime to try another vehicle. What baffles me is that the tool works fine on my Tundra.

Belay my last. The tool will not work in car specific mode. But if I tell it to diagnose in OBDII/EOBD mode, it works fine. This has to be a car specific software issue and I'll call Actron again to lodge a complaint.
