Default Shift Lever

I have a 2004 S2000, lately have been noticing that the shift lever has a lot of play in it even when it is in a gear. I pulled the shift lever out and noticed that the plastic cup/ bushing stayed down in the tranny. I was able to fish out the plastic cup..it doesn't look to be in terrible condition but I am going to replace it. My question is about the shift lever. The steel ball on the end that holds the plastic cup is somewhat pitted. I have attached an image of it. Should I replace the entire shift lever? I assume that the cup should snap tightly to the steel ball on the shift lever.
Thanks for any help
