Default short shifter

i recently purchased a short shifter from someone else on this forum. its the axialflow you can get from the ricks site. anyways, after i installed it i was running through the gears and noticed that you no longer push down on the stick to get it into reverse. you go all the way to the right and down and its in reverse now (where sixth use to be). is this how its suppose to be or did i over tighten the allen screws? i'm pretty sure i had the torque wrench set to the correct settings. someone please help me out. thanks.

Jonathan

Ouch, never push down unless you want reverse.

You mean you had to push down to get into 6th before you even had the short shifter?

Something is really wrong here...

Jonathan, I'm confused too. The stock shifter and the AxialFlow shifter both work the same way, and the only time you are supposed to push down on the shifter is when you want to engage reverse. You pull to the left of center for first and second, let the shifter self-center for third and forth, and push to the right of center for fifth and sixth. You push down, to the right, and back, to engage reverse.

I am not even sure it is possible to shift into sixth while pushing down on the shifter, so I'm thinking I must not understand your question. Can you provide a little more detail?

I have heard of this from one other. He over tightened it and got the same results.

Are you running any rubber spacers between the transmission and the retaining collar (the piece with the 3 bolts through it)?

yeah, there was one that came on it when i got it from another member. is that what is causing the problem? is it not suppose to be there? i had questioned it before when i didnt see the spacer on the shifter on the installation instructions.
