Default Skipping gears

I've read that doing this will do harm to synchros (correct me if I am mistaken). Well, this morning I just had to make that one quick call. I did 2 -> 5. I might be a little paranoid. How can one tell that the synchros are messed up? Any telltale signs (other than take them apart)? Thanks in advance.

You need to know what's a synchro is.

a misshifted "upshift" will bog the engine, it will not do any harm unless you do that everyday
a missshifted downshift will(read:6 to 3, 5 to 2, 6 to 1) will kill the motor, blow the tranny

Actually your tranny will be just fine. Your valves on the other hand will be bent, busted, and/or broken.

Skipping gears on the upshift will wear your syncro's out faster, but doing it hear and there shouldn't do much.

iam7head, I think you are missing something here. We aren't talking about a mis-shift or a missed shift. We are talking about skip shifting, which is intentionally skipping a gear as you upshift.

Skip shifting, for example..... 1, 2, 3, then 6 or 1, 2, then 5, can DAMAGE the synchros on the S2000.

DO NOT SKIP SHIFT WHEN YOU UP SHIFT on our car. The technical explination for that is in the thread that was posted above.

is anyone even reading the thread? this is the 2nd person who has stated mis-shift when that has NOTHING to do with the thread.

question for you all...

so upshift skipping is bad for syncros, what about downshift skipping?

i often find myself skipping from 5th or 4th to 2nd on heavy breaking, rev matching of course...

The cause is driving the car high RPM in 1st, shift into 2nd, then high rpm into 3rd. At this time the engine is screaming it's song and the driver usually feels the need to bring the engine RPM down so he (she) shifts into 6th gear and drops the RPM 3 or 4,000.

The problem is that 6th gear synchro isn't made to work that hard. (What is 5 to 6 RPM change? About 800 RPM?

When that happens the sleeve slides past the synchro that is over worked and grinds into 6th gear. This will mushroom the "Dogs" on the 6th gear and on the sleeve. When the clearance between the sleeve and the hub that it rides on is small enough then the sleeve won't slip backwards into 5th.
this is from woodwork. a honda engineer.
