Default Slack/backlash in the diff

Hello
I have had some issues with the back end making a single clunk noise when I pull away. Havent been able to get to the bottom of it yet.
Today was MOT day (front lower rear wishbone bush, looks like its going to be tear jerkingly expensive reading this forum) and whilst the car was on the ramps the garage let me have a look.
Nothing obvious to see but when turning the propshaft there seemed to be a lot of slack (backlash) in the diff. Is this normal? The garage hadnt worked on an S2000 before but there was a similar aged 3 series BMW on the other ramp and that hardly had any slack.
