speedo/odo unhook
I have a sneeky suspicion that my daughters boyfriend has been 'borrowing'
my wifes 2001 S2K. What I would like to know....is there a way to unhook
a cable or wire or something so that the S2K can be driven without racking
up miles ?? I have noticed a couple of times where there has been a tenth
of a mile or so put on the car when we are out of town, just enough to pull
the car out of the barn, un-plug/hook something, and go !! I once tried to
put a penny on top of one of the tires, it was still there, but upside down !!
Can't remember if thats the way I put it tho !! TIA for any leads !!

I just read a few posts that relate to this subject and have a couple of Q's.
If something has been disconnected/connected, should I have gotten a
check engine light or some other evidence of tampering ?? This kid is a comp-
uter/electronics type, so wonder if he knows how to do this. Maybe I can
check for evidence on the connector, altho the S2K only has 8000 miles or so
and probably doesn't have any dirt/grease that would rub off if you were to
pull on a connector. I will check this out this week-end.

How about this............put a dab of paint on the brake rotor. Nail polish will do. Then see if its gone!
Taking the key's away works just as well. As does yanking a starter fuse or something like that.

surveillance camera w/motion detector. then when you catch him, give him the choice of paying for your equipment purchase or you pressing charges for auto theft.... It's not his to take, even if you leave the keys in the ignition. You could also "feign" going out of town, get a hotel room down the street, and stalk him.....
I think nail polish or ink on the rotor is a great first step. If it changes then I'd go the surveillance route, or datalogging. Who knows how many miles he's putting on and how hard he's beating it?
shameful....

He could remove the connection to the dash guages, but that's a REAL PITA. As suggested, put a small drop of nailpolish on each rotor near the pads. Use a color not normally used by your wife or daughter. You could also use a small drop of rubber cement to hold a hair across a door opening...if the hair is broken, someone's been in the car.
