Default Speedometer going crazy

Yesterday I noticed my speedometer was acting up when I turned on the engine and the hand brake release warning was beeping (car was still static). It was reading from anywhere from 6 - 8km/h. I have not change any gearing, no yellow jacket. Any suggestions on what could cause this or how I can fix this?

Never had a speedo problem on my S, however ive had a couple civics in the past where the speedo would just go crazy and fluctuate erratically. I Would first try checking the wiring, and making sure the contacts on the plug for the speed sensor are clean and corrosion free, and then if it still has problems maby replace the speed sensor. Corrosion was always my problem with the civics as i wash my engines frequently (im a clean freak). Deffinatly check that connector first i believe its on the drivers side around the middle of the tranny on the S2k?? Someone correct me if im wrong!

Try disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes (have your radio code handy). Hook it back up and hope the gremlins in the ECU vanished. If not, try swapping ECUs with a buddy who has the same model year to see if that's were the problem is. After that, wave a dead chicken over your car, break out the multimeter and begin looking for continuity problems.

Didn't get a chance to go to the dealers yet to get the radio code, but now speedo usually stays at 0, the fuel gauge is moving up and down by 1/4 tank. Also EPS indicatior light just went on!

Register at Honda Link, you can get your radio code (and good info) on line.

Thnx for all the replies. After resetting the battery, everything works normally again. If the problem persists, I'll look into replacing the speed sensor. Is that common for an 2006 speed sensor to need replacement so quickly?

Reviving from the dead. Since I've gotten quite a few private messages about this topic, I'll just post my solution here. After I switched out the speed sensor that is attached to the tranny, all is good!

It looks like this:

Another culprit is loose ground wire on the back of the cylinder head. Speedo will be erratic/lag way behind actual speed.

Is there anything you don't know?
