Default Possible MAP sensor problem

Hi All
A friend of mine told me that her car was having problems.

She stated that it was very hard to start, and when it finally does, it "Jumps and sputters". She said that her fuel milage took a dump too. She said that it dropped by 10 MPG over night.
Could this be the MAP sensor? I don't have a clue as to what it is, but I've heard the comments about it.
She said that the mechanic can't figure it out.

She is also having tranny problems with a '01, but that is another problem. Didn't they fix that?

Any comments?

Dave

MAP=Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor. It is located on the air intake tube and is well labeled. A few taps with the butt of a screwdriver may help. Or you can remove it and clean it.

Also might want to consider a gas problem (as in bad gas....gasahol, etc). You could also disconnect the battery for a second to reset the electronics (make sure you have the radio code before doing this or your radio won't work!).

Thanks Utah
I'll tell her. You would think that if that is the problem, the Honda Mechanic would have it dialed in.

PS
Does your step dad still see the white one down the street?

Instead of disconnecting the battery, I'd just pull the fuse for the ECU. The problem is either the MAP sensor or the ECU.

You have a fuse number and location, or a Helm manual reference?

I've seen the "pull the fuse" suggestion before but know one can ever say which one it is??

Thanks

I believe it is the 7.5A fuse marked backup. Here is the procedure.

1. Insert key and turn on the ignition
2. Turn off the ignition, but leave the key in
3. Pull the 7.5 A fuse marked "back-up" (note, make sure you remember which way the fuse goes back in. I know this sounds funny, but people have reported problems when it was reversed).
4. Wait 10 seconds
5. Re-insert the fuse (right orientation)
6. Remove the key.
7. Insert the key and start the engine. Verify proper operation (my favorite part...) my running up the road!!!

That should do it. Of course you could always disconnect the battery.
