just a thought, its a 4 banger, so pulling the head aint that much more work. if this is your first time doing this, i would def pull the head so you can work in a safer environment. i personally did this job on my h22 head, and i'll be damned if i thought of doing in on the car. and do yourself a favor and get the valve spring comressor tool. its a 100 bucks and makes compressing the valve spring a snap. good luck brotha.

Dude.....pulling the s2k head is a ton of work in comparison to lifting off the cams and doing the retainers.

The guy is unsure about doing the retainers, and you advise pulling the head

Not to worry, Billman. There's no way I'd pull the head.

While doing the valve adjustment I'll assess whether or not to do the springs and retainers. That is, whether or not they need to be replaced as well as whether or not I want to do it.

That'll happen next weekend. If I decide to do it, that'll come later.

Thanks for everyone's input.

dude, it cant be any harder then pulling a prelude head while in my civic. if hes unsure about doing some springs retainers swap, them pay someone to do it. beucase if you drop a valve your gonna be even more mad then if you just pulled the head

whatever though, buy the book, and just dew it! learning by experience is the best way, all this talk is not gona fix the problem. and like i said, good luck

The point Billman was making is replacing retainers with the head installed is EASIER than removing the head.

MyBad & HotRodS2000

Let me know what happens. I'm in the same position as you MyBad. I'd like to adjust my valves, and do a leak-down test. If needed change out the valve springs, keepers, and retainers. If you're going to be anywhere near Winston we can do it here, or I can make the drive to Wilmington. It'd be worth it to me to drive to have it done right and to learn to do it myself. I'm scared to have anyone take my engine apart without my intimate involvement, and I'm scared to venture in there by myself without any prior experience. I'm pretty handy, but I've never removed a valve cover, so having fellow S enthusiests there could give me the courage I need. Let me know something guys.

Jason,

I won't be changing springs and retainers tomorrow even if I find it needs to be done. It'll require special tools that I don't have. If I find it needs to be done I'll get the tools and schedule it for later. I'll let you know if and when so you can come to Wilmy and help.
