As a matter of fact, I'm about to put my 3rd one in. The noise right after starting is so nasty people actually turn around to see what it was.

Billman250 the noise was very loud come to think of it. Is the timing chain tensioner/starter motor change a big job to do. Worried about the timing chain tensioner sounds like that's going to do a lot of damage if fails.
Think I give Honda a ring tomorrow.
Thanks for the info.

T-chain tensioner is about 140 bucks and very easy to change. If you're slick, 20 minutes.

Back in the day, I started a thread called "starter afterun noise". I thought it was a sticking starter.

Turned out to be the timing chain tensioner. The s2k starter is held to extremely accurate spacing from the ring gear. I'm not feeling it's the starter.

You want a solid 100% answer, do a 10 sec walk around vid, with good audio of course, and post it here
I have this noise too (or maybe not). Your indication that you initially tought it was the starter has me thinking my noise might be the same as yours. But then you mention a "10 second walk-around" and that knocks me out - mine never lasts for more than a second.

On first listen I would swear it's the traditional problem of the solenoid not retracting because it has "that sound" and ONLY occurs on startup and goes away in less than 2 seconds. But sometimes it sounds more like a belt squeal from hell (I have Comptech SC too). I'm sure it's loud enough to be heard 50' away.

But then I noticed that it NEVER occurs when the engine is warmed up. And in a few cases it actually seemed to occur a second or so AFTER the engine is running and I've released the start button. In other words, the engine cranks, starts, stops cranking and runs normally, short pause, loud grinding/rattling/almost-squealing noise for one second.

So one time I actually pressed the start button after thte engine was running to compare sounds, and while it was similar, it's definitely different than the noise I get on startup.

I'll try to get a recording next time, it's a pretty awful sound. Oh, I'm at 168k, original chain & tensioner.

Your starter motor isn't disengaging from the flywheel all the time. It will get worse. Might need a starter rebuild or new starter.

It is NOT the starter.

Modifry.....the walk around vid was meant to catch the first two seconds of startup. It usually happens in the AM, right after the engine fires. Lasts about 1 or two secs, the immediately stops. It's a very rapid sound, like a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle wheel. For the cost and ease of install, I would try it. I know how you like to experiment

The installed Comptech SC is going to slow Modifry from getting it done in 20 minutes though......
