Soooooo....
Here is an update. It looks like the rack shaft inside the rack broke. Here are some pics. Looks like I need a steering rack. Any one know if Honda sells the shaft only?

Only sold as a complete unit from Majestic $1,025.53 and didn't find any after market options available (close ratio and the like). Finding a used rack is going to be your most cost effective solution.

This. Does the car have any accident history? I can't see that just happening randomly. Steering racks are HEAVILY QC'd.

As for used racks, let us know what year you have. I'm almost certain about the following: 00-05 racks will all mate up phyiscally & electrically, but the 04-05 rack is slower (less preferred, IMO). 06+ racks will physically mount, but one or both of the plugs are different, making it incompatible.

Yeah, had a bad accident in 2002 (spent 3mos in the shop) and it looks like it took this long for this issue to surface. Looking for a used AP1 rack now.

I am really glad you caught this in the driveway and not on the highway!

You never got a warning light, after this accident.. re: steering issues? Or have the steering feel "not right?"

Kinda scary...

No, no warning light. The steering did feel slightly more responsive when I turned to the left as opposed to turning to the right but I just accepted it as the way it was going to be after the accident and I had to live with it.

OOOHHHHHHH BY THE WAY!!! I had the same thing happen to me!! I hit the front of my car it was in the shop for about 1 month and my steering rack was making a thunk noise when I would turn right. I took it back to Cooks Collision (where I got my work done) and I told the manager that this is happening and he took it in and ordered a whole new rack and put it in!

And at that time I don't think I was even on my same coverage anymore I was with a different company!

But it was still part of the fix from the collision so it was still covered.
