Same boat here... but mines doesnt sound like that.. its a little bit more quite but still sound when Idling and around 3k RPM it stops after 4k so I think it has to be with oil pressure? dont know but first I though my engine was gone... but then saw that most people is having the same issue

Ahhh. I was hoping you would know what that noise was Billman. I'm stumped. I just hope it's not a spun bearing or something of that nature.

I think I'm just going to pick up a new OEM TCT to see what happens.

On the drive home from work just now, I noticed that the noise is only there during light load or while engine braking. when I give it gas to accelerate the noise goes away.

I'm having the same exact problem as a lot of you.. clacking noise between 3-4k RPM especially under light load. Appears to be coming from the front end of the motor. What I've tried:

-OEM replacement TCT-no change
-valve adjustment, all were pretty close, some needed tightenning- no change
-compression and leakdown tests (nothing too abnormal)
-oil/trans oil/diff fluid change/OEM filter (why not)

I've been told by a mechanic friend that it cant be accessories because that noise would be throughout the rev range and Not specifically between 3-4k ish but I'm going to replace the belt and check everything. I've been driving it like this for several months and maybe 5000 miles. I burn a lot of oil, probably a quart every 1000 miles engouh to were the car smells like burning oil (not cool). Not sure if this is related. its a MY00 with 90k miles.

Has anyone explored the the possibility of a stuck fuel injector? would it make any sense to be only over 3-4k rpm? I've noticed a decrease in power (if not an unwillingness to smash on it)

Lets see if we can figure this out without ripping into the block hopefully. I'm starting to accept it might be rod knock, but it's been running for so long for it not to have given out. Any input on this??

I see what you mean, but the fact that my noise started IMMEDIATELY after installing an aftermatket tct makes me have to assume its tct related. My mechanic actually thinks its the cat starting to go, but an oem tct should be coming in the mail in the next day or two so thats what Im trying next, if thats not it, then Ill go from there.

kinda sounds similar to mine and it turned out to be the bearing was shot in the tensioner pulley. does it sound like its coming from around there? what i did was pull the serpentine belt off and started the car and it didnt make that noise anymore so i figured it had to be one of the pulleys. when i went to touch my tensioner pulley it had a little play in it. i dont know if its your problem but thought i would post anyways

Update. Pan was pulled and there was some very light dusting of metallic material at the bottom of the pan - no chunks of metal or anything like that. No spun rod bearings. Timing chain cover was taken off as well - everything looked good there. Oil pump looked good as well. Head is coming off today to take out the pistons.
