stripped the differential drain plug
Hi. I have replaced the differential fluid before, but this time I just could not get the drain bolt to open. I made sure to open the fill bolt at first, which worked out fine. I used a 24mm socket, but yet with all the force it just stripped it. I tried air tools to see if it would open it, but no luck. The corners are stripped. Has anyone else ran in to this issue? Thinking of spraying wd40 all over it and try heating the bolt up with a torch maybe? Will try a vise grip frist. I have a broken diff at home, I can just use the drain plug off that one. This is frustrating!
posted in wrong forum but whatever lol. I think they sell a tool for rounding off hex heads. You can also find a socket that fits and hammering it on to fix the threads. Another method is to give it a slight tighten, then break it lose. There is just about a dozen ways to tackle this problem.
damn its problems like this that make an otherwise smooth job turn into a nightmare
at least it wasn't somewhere where it's very hard to access
next time blast any and all bolts with PB blaster the night before or at least 30 mins before you start work. Use an impact. If you dont have an impact, make sure you're using the right socket and use a hammer to hit the torque wrench to break it rather than trying to pry and turn it with strength. but since it's stripped already, maybe welding the nut on it but ive never tried that before.

For bolt heads, I prefer the word 'rounded'. If you say stripped, I'll think your talking about the threads.
