Define "strongest".

And yes, bolts for what?

If you really need a good quality bolt, you don't want any of this stuff sold by auto or hardware folks. You want aerospace grade bolts, like the AN series. The quality control is better.

Typically, I thought that an SAE grade 8 is the strongest bolt out there with respect to tensile strength. There are other specs that are similar such as ASTM A490 but the ones that I believe are readily available are grade 8 though.

Grade 8 bolts are the strongest 'common' bolts. You can get them in different coats. ie: galvanized, zinc, black oxide, etc. But aerospace bolts are stronger than your typical USS/SAE bolts. Whatever anyone tells you Stainless steel bolts are NOT stronger than your typical grade bolts. Stainless steel is a soft metal.
