Tail Lights outs on MY00

Tail Lights outs on MY00
I was driving home last night from the car lot when I got pulled over. The officer informed me that my tail lights were out. This was a complete shock to me as I had just got the car inspected a couple of weeks ago. He figures its a fuse or wire and that I should take care of it for my own safety. My brake lights and reverse lights all come on, but when I turn on my headlights, my tail lights fail to turn on.
BTW, I have never removed or messed with the tail lights since I've owned the car. And when I picked up the car 7 months ago the tail lights worked.
So I check both fuse boxes and neither of them seem to have a fuse that indicates it being for the tail lights.
Am I missing something here? Should I be checking the relays that saying "lighting relay" under the hood as well?

the car 10 years old. ...the AP1 tailight uses dual filament..basically...a low wattage filament that stays lit for your parking lights...and a higher wattage filamament that flashes on when you hit your brakes. sounds like one of the filaments finally broke
i say replace the taillight bulbs and be on your way

I'll look into it. But both at the same time? The rear license plate light doesnot turn on either. I'm thinking that can't be attributed to the tail lights burning out. Anythig else?
