TCT DIY - Replacement or repair
#241
Good point. If people could reply back with mileage driven since sandblasting, what their driving style is, and also what oil they use that would be awesome.

Preventive maintenance is best practice.
Items with short service lives should be replaced before they wear out. And they should be replaced with parts known to not wear out (cough .. Biillman GenX TCT).

Roughing up worm screw has become routine maintenance.
And I'm tired of it. I've been using a dremel sanding method I found on youtube several years ago and it fixes the TCT problem for probably 15k miles of regular commuter-type driving before I have to do it again. Cheap and easy, but I worry about wearing out the bolt threads from removing and refastening it so often.
I have found that using high-quality full-synthetic oil makes it last longer. I think my cheapness of going with conventional oil for so long contributed to my regular TCT repairs.
I'm currently in the process of replacing it with a Billman's TCT (once I can actually do a PM to him). I am also only doing full-synthetic oil changes since the car is running so much better with them.

Dremeling or hand sanding the worm gear only destroys it. Just the act of taking the tensioner in and out is why your noise subsides.
