Technical question
How much engine damage is caused by starting a car after a fresh oil change with no oil in the filter? Should one run the starter with the fuel relay disabled to prime the oil pump to avoid this? If not are there any suggestions as to how to avoid that nasty sound after a fresh oil change start-up?
Just curious.

This has been discussed, I actually think I posted something asking the same thing. The end result is most do not prime the filters, but some do. If the engine has been ran recently the amount of oil coating the surfaces should be plenty adequate. I changed mine cold once, I don't recall why, but I did. In that situation I can maybe see a bit of extra wear, but I doubt it is anything crazy. At the end of the day I decided to prime the filters from now on, at least soak the element, it isn't that messy and it can't hurt anything
The obvious answer is to fill the filter like the manual says. If you forget, which I have, damage most likely won't occur. Ask me how I know.

P.S. I now manually turn the crank over when I take her out of winter hibernation. While replacing my AP1 retainers to AP2 I found out just how effective manually turnover is in lubing the top end

You're right I just looked at mine too, I guess I had it mixed up in my head. I just looked in the service manual and it also does not mention putting oil in the new filter, only a light coat on the filter gasket. Oh well, I will still do it out of habit.
