Temp guage hot on cold start
Hey everyone, I am new to the community, just purchased a 2000 berlina black with 178,000 miles. This is my first s2000 and the other day when I started the car, 50 degrees outside, the temp gauge immediately jumped up to hot and then slowly when down to cold. Now I have already bled the coolant system and replaced the ECT but I still get a random hot temp on a cold start. I sometimes get the opposite where the gauge sits on cold for 20 min even while driving. I even had the temp gauge jump from 3 bars to 6 in an instant and then slowly drop to either 1 bar or 3 bars while driving. Has anyone experienced this or can maybe pint me to the right direction?

This sounds more like a gauge issue than an actual engine temp issue, considering it will jump to hot when engine is dead cold.
I'd look at the coolant temp sensor first.

I forgot to mention, we swapped out the thermostat just in case since it is a high mileage car. This issue was before and after changing the thermostat and coolant temp sensor. I’m going to check the ground point on the car so see if maybe there is an issue there.

Are you sure you changed the correct sensor? The sensor on the radiator is actually just a fan switch on '00-'05 models. The actual temp sensor is buried in the back behind the intake manifold.
Thermostat is not the issue here.
Look at your ECU. AEMv1 and v2 ECU's are known to not be friendly with the factory coolant gauge and will exhibit the same issue you have.

What did you use to seal the sensor threads? Maybe its preventing consistent sensor ground.

Here is a video of what is happening. Notice the car sits at one bar even after 20 min of driving and then shot up to full bars, then slowly dropped down to 3 bars where it rested for the rest of my drive.
