I'm interested but I would ONLY do it if there's a way to prevent the check engine light from coming on. Is there a way?

I installed a test pipe on my car. Gas mileage gets crappy as hell. The exhaust didn't get louder, just a lil bit higher pitched. I run a Tanabe RM exhaust.... And also, I have no CEL. What my friend did was weld another O2 sensor mount on top of the existing one on the test pipe... he said that since the sensor doesn't sit directly in the flow of the gases, it doesn't pick up much of a reading? I dunno, it worked for my car.

I currently have the stock exhaust on my car, along with the test pipe. Regarding noise, I can't hear a difference. I really don't think the car gets louder with a test pipe.
