Default think second gear synchro is shot

i just bought an 00 S2000 with 65k miles on it. the dealership i bought it from gave me a 30 day drivetrain warranty and i think i might have to use it. sometimes when quickly shifting from first to second the car grinds really bad, but then other times it's fine. it doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it sounds god awful. sound like a bad synchro to you guys? if it is i want to go ahead and get it replaced while i can.

Well, go ahead and push the issue. If they go for it, you'll get some new parts. However, I'll bet this car has never had the clutch fluid or the tranny fluid changed. Changing these will most likely resolve much of what you're experiencing. Also, you'll need to learn the nuances of this car's shifting characteristics. Your technique may be the other part of the equation (the fluids being the first part). You may not be pushing your clutch completely to the floor on those shifts when you grind or you may not be slotting exactly into the 2nd gear gate when you grind (hold pressure against the left barrier when pulling down into 2nd) or you may be trying to "ram" into second at high rpm (try to hesitate by lightening up on the pressure just before the stick goes into 2nd). Then there's the possibility that your clutch/throttle/shift syncronization might be off a bit.

i have the receipt for the tranny fluid change from the original owner, so i doubt it's that.

btw, i've never owned an automatic car in my life, so i doubt it's my technique, but it definitely could be.

Its definately the way you shift...I've driven manual cars all my life and drive my cousin's NSX regularly. Never have I driven a car where you need to shift cleanly than in the S2000. You cannot shift sloppily in this car or you are "rewarded" with the nice grind.

ok, i drove the car all day today (that's part of my job, haha) and through all types of shifts i could not get it to grind again. the only thing i did different was make sure i pulled it a little to the left instead of just straight back.

i'm a little worried that i may have done some damage before i learned that this is how you have to do it. i wish i didn't have to work 6 days a week or i'd take it back to the honda dealership to make sure. i have a 30 day warranty on the car.

I know just how you feel. But personally, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

When I first got my S, I had the same problem. Was really freaked out. But changed out the tranny fluid, and learned to shift better and have not had a grind ever since. I was also afraid that I might have done some damage to the car before hand tho. But then I think about how my GF's Civic has over 140k miles on it, with the original clutch (?!?) and never changed the tranny fluid (?!?), and the thing runs fine. Being made by the same peeps, I somehow doubt the S2000 is that fragile, that even a week's worth of ginds will do serious harm to the car. If you don't have the grind issue anymore, than it sounds like there is no problem.

If you don't have a grind anymore, and your tranny is better than a 95 Civic DX, I think it will hold up a while longer.

But that's just me.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOU'RE NEW S2000!THE PROBLEM YOU ARE HAVING WITH YOU'RE CAR IS EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM I WAS HAVING WITH MINE WHEN I PURCHASED IT BACK IN APRIL 04.THE TRANSMISSION WOULD GRIND INTO SECOND AFTER ABOUT 20-30 MINUTES OF DRIVING.THIS ONLY HAPPENED TO ME WHEN I WOULD REV IT PAST 6K AND SHIFT IT BRISKLY.AT THE TIME I THOUGHT HOW COULD THIS BE?THE CAR ONLY HAD 12.5K ON IT!I HAD DRIVEN MANY OTHER S2K WITH NO GRINDING PROBLEMS AT ALL(IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING HOW I'VE DRIVEN SO MANY OF THESE CARS,IM A TECH AT A HONDA DEALERSHIP)I TRIED ALL OF THE NORMAL THINGS,FLUSHED AND BLED OUT THE CLUTCH MASTER AND SLAVE CYLINDER,CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID SEVERAL TIMES WITH DIFFERENT BRANDS(REDLINE MTF,GM FRICTION MODIFIER AND HONDA MTF)NONE OF THIS HELPED MY PROBLEM.I CHECKED ON ISIS(HONDA INTERACTIVE NETWORK)AND FOUND A SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM BUT FOR MY00.I TALKED WITH TWO ENGINEERS ON THIS AND WAS ADVISED TO PERFORM THE SERVICE BULLETIN ON MINE.THEY BOTH TOLD ME THAT THESE PROBLEMS ARE CAUSED BY MISSHIFTS AND SHIFTING MUCH TOO FAST(REMEMBER THE SHIFT GATES ARE ONLY INCHES APART)SO I PERFORMED THE BULLETIN ON MY TRANSMISSION AND IT FIXED THE PROBLEM.ITS BEEN AROUND 3K NOW AND ITS NEVER GRINDED SINCE.SO IM VERY HAPPY.SO HOPEFULLY YOU CAN GET YOURS FIXED TOO.GOOD LUCK!!
